The Long Beach Water Department (LBWD) is examining the addition of alternative membrane-compatible disinfectants, including ultraviolet light (UV) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) to achieve both biofouling control and minimizing conventional disinfectant contactor. The goals are to:determine if the application of either UV or ClO2 will have deleterious affects ondesalination membranes; quantify the ability of either UV and/or ClO2 to preventbiogrowth; and, determine the ability of this disinfectant to recover fouled membranesin the presence of high nutrient source. This paper presents the bench-scale andprototype-scale tests results on ClO2 testing only. Includes 14 references, table, figures.
