Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published Method 1694 as aperformance-based screening method using LC/ESI/MS/MS combined with an SPE technique, which is applicable for analysis of seventy-four pharmaceuticals/personal care products (PPCPs) in water, soil, sediment, and biosolidsthrough two extractions and four analyses. In Method 1694, isotope dilution calibration is usedfor the analytes that have isotopically labeled analogs. Internal standard calibration usingisotopically labeled compounds is used for those analytes that do not have isotopically labeledanalogs. However, as a result of several issues with the current version of Method 1694, extensive validation and improvementmust be performed to provide a more accurate and less costly method to meet the analyticalneed. This paper presents the results of validating Method 1694. Efforts include:improving the method sensitivity, accuracy, and precision through a series of modifications;studying more PPCPs that have been detected in the environment; developing two separateextraction and analysis methods instead of four methods to reduce costs; and, investigating thestability and holding time requirement of selected PPCPs.
