This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting study objectives of using rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs) to measure total organic carbon (TOC) and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursor removal by granular activated carbon (GAC). Methods included the collection of water samples: in 55-gallon drums once permonth for 8 months from 24th street, Union Hill andVal Vista Water Treatment Plant; using settled water; samples were pre-filtered through a 10 µm glass fiber filter cartridge. Also, RSSCT sampling and SDS testing included the following:collecting samples every 12 hours in the first 3 days and then once per day during RSSCT test;parameters monitored were TOC, TDN and UV254; simulated distribution system (SDS) test at 20%,40%, 60% and 80% of UV254 breakthrough; and, 72 hours and 120 hours holding time for SDS toremain 0.5 ppm Cl2 residual. The modeling approach of TOC breakthrough is presented, along with recommendations and future research.
