This powerpoint presentation presents study goals that included: determine a novel approach for characterizing the earlystages of corrosion;attempt to understand the mechanisms of surfacecorrosion on copper; and, examine the effects of inhibitors, i.eorthophosphate, on copper corrosion.Experimental approach included the following: pieces of pure copper were cut into 1 x 1 in2 sections;water conditions for the test solutions were 120 mg/L sulfate,3 mg/L Cl2, 10 mg/L DIC, 60 mg/L chloride and 6 mg/Lorthophosphate;pH was controlled at 6.5, 7, 8 and 9 with couponssuspended in stagnated test water for 6 and 24 hrs; and, after samples were dried, images were acquired in airwith tapping-mode AFM.
