This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the water sector's need for a transparent decision-makingprocess for disinfectant selection that considers all disinfectant options fairly, is carried out atthe local level, and isbased on established engineering practices. The various steps of the disinfectant selection process are presented, along with practical parallels to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) decision process. Concluding remarks include:disinfectant selection is extremely challenging in today'sregulatory and public affairs environment;anticipated legislation will not alleviate this tension and islikely to make this basic operational decision even moredifficult.Utilities are best served by:making disinfectant selections based on goals andobjectives derived from utility governing board;following a transparent evaluation process;preparing now for future evaluations; integrating risk communication principles into theevaluation process; and, integrating stakeholder outreach early in theevaluation process.
