Cooling towers are subjected to varying water chemistry andenvironmental conditions, and require protection from theseelements. The major source of cooling tower corrosion is thewarm circulating cooling water, which contains dissolved andsuspended solids. The most common material used today forthis purpose is galvanized steel, providing protection to boththe interior and exterior of the cooling tower. Althoughgalvanized steel has been successfully used for many years toprotect cooling towers, a competent water treatment programmust be employed to protect and maintain the galvanizedsteel. The following document reviews the galvanizingprocess, the means of corrosion, and the recommendedmeasures to protect cooling towers from corrosion.
