By the year 2030, scheduled passenger trafficaround the world is expected to more than double,from 2.7 billion in 2011 to 6 billion annually. Overthe next 20 years or so, the number of flights shouldincrease accordingly, from 30 million to 60 million.In addition, as the world economy recovers from thecurrent financial slump, air cargo traffic should followa similar upward growth trend.

Planners know only too well that two decadesdo not represent an excessive lead time whenconsidering the billon-dollar infrastructure projectsneeded to provide the airport and airspace capacitythat growth will demand.
