Need: This paper provides the introduction to and background of PRCI as the sponsor of the Eighth Symposium on Line Pipe Research. Its principal theme is developed around the cooperative research approach pioneered by the PRCI to meet the special needs involving long-running brittle fracture problems of the early 1950s and the adaptation of that approach to a series of ongoing research needs through the early 1990s. A series of representative research programs is summarized, and the special PRCI themes advanced by sponsorship of periodic industry-wide information exchange programs are discussed.
Result: The PRCI organization reflects the special research needs its members collectively have identified, and an evaluation of its success in meeting these needs is based on what it is delivering to its members. For the most part, this paper focuses on organizational issues affecting policy and budgetary authority. Details on membership and the activities of the supporting supervisory committees assigned specific technical responsibilities are covered to a lesser degree
Benefit: The Eighth Symposium on Line Pipe Research takes place shortly after PRCI's 40th anniversary. During those 40 years its interests and support expanded to global level with current members drawn from the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. During this period, PRCI's members, with ongoing administrative support of the Pipeline Research Council International, have shared a mutual commitment to a cooperative research program, funded and directed by the natural gas industry itself and focused on pooling knowledge and resources in support of the safety, reliability and efficiency of the global asset represented by over a quarter-million miles of natural gas transmission networks.
