Need: The repair of dents in an operating line presents the pipeline engineer with a difficult problem: should it be cut out, sleeved and the sleeve infiltrated with epoxy grout to prevent the dent from flexing, or can it be left as is. Obviously, being able to determine that a dent as found can be safely left in could lead to significant savings in maintenance cost depending on the condition of the line. But what if there is a shallow gouge (scored metal) in the dent? Under what circumstances can these be "dressed" (removed by grinding) and the dent left in an operating line. Additionally, how deep or long of a gouge can be removed by grinding without seriously weakening the dented area?

Benefit: A series of tests on various grades and thicknesses of line pipe were run using synthetic dents and gouges. The tests included straight away hydrostatic pressuring and fatigue tests. These tests led to development of guidelines for evaluating dents with gouges - which are safe as is, which can be dressed and recommendations as to when such dents should be removed.

Result: The guidelines and procedures from this work, properly applied, can result in considerable savings based on choosing the most economical, while safe, choice for addressing dents and scratches
