Need: Computer programming is needed to evaluate the capabilities of calculating the magnetic leakage field in detecting buried pipeline defects.
Result: A library of Fortran time sharing computer programs was written to model the magnetic field of the magnetic flux leakage technique. The model is two-dimensional and assumes linearity. Solution of the field is achieved through the iterative relaxation method.
Benefit: Leakage fields of interest are those produced by defects within pipeline walls such as inclusions, voids, cracks, corrosion and hard spot. The programs can model the field produced by any of the above defects, both within the plate and in the surrounding airspace. The information obtained using this model will then be used to evaluate the magnetic leakage field technique in detecting pipeline wall defects.
