Need: High-voltage current effects on grounded metallic structures.

Result: Presented in this report are the results of "full-scale" tests that were made to determine the effects on grounded metallic structures of stray high-voltage direct current flowing in the earth as a result of operation on the Pacific NW-SW DC Intertie.

Benefit: Current from the HVDC ground electrodes was found to adversely affect buried piping and other ground metallic structures in the area of the ground electrodes and in many directions and for extensive distances beyond the vicinity of the electrodes. The results of thousands of measurements made on recording instruments show that the potentials to earth and current flow in the majority of structures tested changed with scheduled changes in the HVDC ground current.
