Need: The purpose of the study is to organize the reportable incident data into a meaningful format from which the safety record of the industry can be assessed.
The project is a continuing one in which it is anticipated that each years data will be analyzed and compared to that from previous years. Any gradual trends and/or sharp breaks in the statistics are to be analyzed for possible safety implications.
Result: Reportable incidents are defined by the Office of Pipeline Safety Operations as those which: resulted in a death or injury requiring hospitalization; required the removal from service of any segment of transmission pipeline; resulted in gas ignition; caused an estimated damage to the property of the operator or of others or both of a total of $5000 or more; involved a leak requiring immediate repair; involved a test failure that occurred while testing either with gas or another test medium; or in the judgment of the operator was significant even though it did not meet any of the above criteria.
Benefit: This report presents an analysis of statistical data obtained from reports of leak or rupture incidents and test failures in natural gas transmission and gathering lines over the 5 year period from 1970 to 1975.
