Need: Legislation is moving toward mandating natural gas transmission operators to construct new and replacement facilities such That they accommodate the passage of in-line inspection devices. Congress is investigating the idea of making some amount of in-line inspection mandatory to ensure pipeline safety through structural integrity analysis.
Result: This report will briefly describe the performance of eddy current and magnetic flux leakage systems and the difficulties that have been recognized as impediments for stress corrosion crack detection on ILI vehicles.
Benefit: Two promising systems, based on electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMAT's) and piezoelectric (elastic waves) have emerged. Results of field testing using these systems is summarized and will show the state of development of both EMAT's and piezoelectric in detecting SCC in pipelines when integrating with an ILI inspection vehicle.
