THE ALUMINUM ENCLOSURE OF A STATE-OF-THE-ART COMMERCIAL RADAR DISPLAY FACING INCREASING MARKET PRICING PRESSURE WAS REDESIGNED TO REDUCE COST WHILE MAINTAINING APPEARANCE AND IMPROVING RELIABILITY AND VIBRATION PERFORMANCE. THROUGH A COORDINATED EFFORT BETWEEN THE COMPANY'S ENGINEERING STAFF, CONSULTANTS, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM A LOCAL UNIVERSITY, VARIOUS ADHESIVE SUPPLIERS, AND THE SHEET METAL FABRICATORS, AN OPTIMIZED DESIGN WAS ACHIEVED. ISSUES OF LOWER COSTS STRUCTURE AND MANUFACTURABILITY WERE OPTIMIZED TO ACHIEVE HIGHER LEVELS OF VIBRATION PERFORMANCE AND AN ENCLOSURE DESIGN THAT WAS MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO FABRICATE. STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES REDUCED THE QUANTITY AND DIFFICULTY OF WELDING, AND ALLOWED NEW DESIGN APPROACHES. AS PART OF THE DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURABILITY, AN INNOVATIVE JOINT DESIGN WAS DEVELOPED THAT UTILIZED HIDDEN BLIND RIVETS AS ALIGNMENT AND FIXTURING DEVICES. IN C
