MCDONNELL DOUGLAS IS CURRENTLY UTILIZING A GANTRY ROBOT TO PERFORM ROUTING AND DRILLING OF FLAT AND CONTOURED SHEET METAL AIRCRAFT PARTS. THE CELL IS BEING IMPLEMENTED TO REDUCE COSTS AND PROVIDE QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS OVER CONVENTIONAL MANUAL OPERATIONS. USING CONVENTIONAL AND NONCONVENTIONAL TRIM FIXTURES, A SHUTTLE TABLE SYSTEM, AND AUTOMATIC TOOL CHANGE, THE CELL ALLOWS OPERATORS TO SET UP PARTS IN ONE ZONE WHILE THE ROBOT TRIMS IN AN ADJACENT ZONE. TRAINED PRODUCTION PERSONNEL WILL OPERATE THE ROBOT USING A STAND-ALONE CONTROLLER, AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROGRAMMING NEW PARTS AT THE PRODUCTION SITE.
