This paper discusses synchronous and non-synchronous assembly lines, using conveyor equipment to move product between assembly stations. It discusses the use of programmable logic controllers (PLC's) in directing product movement within the conveyor system. Zone-to-zone product tracking is discussed in detail, eliminating the need for bar code scanners in many manufacturing/assembly systems. Two example systems are reviewed.
