Cadmium is an environmentally unfriendly material that has mechanical, electrical and corrosion protection properties that are difficult to replace. No single material has been found to replace this metal for all applications. One of the properties of cadmium is its ability to provide a lubricious surface and to produce a predictable torque and tension relationship when used with fasteners. A zinc plated fastener, for example, will not be as lubricious as cadmium, and a number of sample tests will produce a wide range of results. The study presented here explores some of the options that improve the torque and tension relationship and presents the results of torque tension tests according to General Motors Specification GM 90640P.
