Resin impregnation of P/M improves machinability by extending tool life several times over. The cost of impregnation is more than offset by the savings in tool wear. Resin impregnation is an engineered process which can be optimized. Practically any sintered P/M material can be impregnated with resin. In Austenitic stainless steels, impregnation may be required to allow machining. For most materials, impregnation allows higher surface cutting speeds and reduced scrap.
