Commercial aircraft engine enclosures are required to be fireproof. This project developed a fire test method based on FAA criteria and performed fire tests on a variety of composite laminates and sandwiches. Performance was assessed using the FAA criteria for fireproofness. To evaluate the residual strength capability of the candidate materials, a uni-axial compression test method was developed. Tests performed on fire-damaged panels were compared to compression tests performed on control (undamaged) specimens. This work showed that select composite materials and constructions (e.g. sandwich) are viable options for use as fireproof structure in aircraft engine enclosures.
