COMPOSITE MATERIALS HAVE BEEN USED IN HIGH- ENERGY PHYSICS RESEARCH DEVICES FOR MANY YEARS. MAGNETS FOR USE IN THE SUPERCONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER (SSC) REQUIRE COMPOSITE MATERIALS MORE ADVANCED THAN THOSE IN GENERAL USE TO MEET STRINGENT DESIGN CRITERIA. THESE MATERIALS FUNCTION BOTH AS STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AND AS THERMAL STANDOFFS FOR THE SUPERCONDUCTING COIL. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS FOR TWO COMPONENTS USED IN SSC DIPOLE MAGNET CRYOSTATS, THE INNER AND OUTER SUPPORT POST TUBE, THEIR METHOD OF FABRICATION, AND THE RESULTS OF TESTING AT FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY.
