TRAPPED RUBBER MOLDING UTILIZING THE THERMAL EXPANSION PROPERTIES OF ELASTOMERS HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED FOR MANY YEARS AS AN ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVE TO AUTOCLAVES AND HYDROCLAVES. HOWEVER, EARLY ATTEMPTS ACHIEVED ONLY LIMITED SUCCESS DUE TO DIFFICULTIES IN CONTROLLING THE PRESSURE. A NEW PROCESS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED THAT ALLOWS CONTROLLED, UNIFORM PRESSURE CONTROL ALONG THE COMPOSITE SURFACE INDEPENDENT OF ITS PROCESSING TEMPERATURE. THE CONTROLLED TRAPPED RUBBER PROCESS OFFERS THE ADVANTAGES OF REQUIRING LESS-EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT, LESS SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED, AND OFFERS THE POTENTIAL OF GENERATING HIGH PRESSURES IF REQUIRED. THE TECHNIQUE IS ESPECIALLY SUITED FOR FABRICATING COMPLEX SHAPED COMPOSITE COMPONENTS.
