RESIN TRANSFER MOLDING (RTM) IS A PROCESS OF INFUSING A LIQUID RESIN INTO A DRY FIBER PREFORM WHILE IN A CLOSED MOLD. WHEN IN THE MOLD, THE RESIN HARDENS AND PERMANENTLY TRAPS THE THOUSANDS OF TINY FILAMENTS IN PROPER REGISTER. RTM HAS BEEN USED FOR MANUFACTURING POLYESTER FIBERGLASS PARTS FOR MANY YEARS. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN RESINS, REINFORCEMENT FIBER, AND INSTRUMENTATION HAVE MADE RTM A VIABLE OPTION FOR MANY HIGHLY STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS. THE WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR AVIATION RESEARCH IS CONDUCTING STUDIES TO DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATENESS OF COMPOSITE USE FOR VARIOUS APPLICATIONS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND HOW RTM IS BEST USED AND HOW TO UTILIZE THE CURRENT STATE OF THE TECHNOLOGY.
