THE USE OF REACTION-BONDED SILICON CARBIDE AS A MATERIAL FOR MECHANICAL SEAL APPLICATIONS IS OUTLINED AND THE CURRENT PRODUCTION PROCESS REVIEWED. THE POTENTIAL OF CERAMIC INJECTION MOLDING AS AN IMPROVED MANUFACTURING ROUTE IS DEMONSTRATED, AND THE CRITICAL ROLE OF CLOSE DIMENSIONAL CONTROL EMPHASIZED. THREE KEY AREAS OF THE PROCESS ARE INVESTIGATED--CHOICE OF CERAMIC POWDER, CHOICE OF BINDER SYSTEM COMPONENTS, AND MOLDING TECHNIQUES--AND THEIR RELATIVE EFFECTS ON DIMENSIONAL CONTROL ASSESSED. STRESS RELAXATION DURING DEBONDING IS SHOWN TO BE THE DOMINANT CAUSE OF DEFORMATION. POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS ARE SUGGESTED.
