THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED STRUCTURAL CERAMICS FOR HEAT ENGINE AND OTHER APPLICATIONS REQUIRES CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTS IN PROCESSING TO GAIN RELIABILITY AND STRENGTH. THIS PAPER REVIEWS THE PUBLISHED WORK ON PROCESSING IMPROVEMENTS AND STRENGTH IMPROVEMENTS GAINED BY THE USE OF STATISTICALLY DESIGNED EXPERIMENTS TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES IN PROCESSING. SILICON CARBIDE IS USED AS AN EXAMPLE OF AN ADVANCED STRUCTURAL CERAMIC, AND IMPROVEMENTS IN PROCESSING ARE SHOWN BY THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES. RELIABILITY OF THE CERAMIC IS DISCUSSED AS A FUNCTION OF PROCESSING IMPROVEMENTS TO REDUCE FLAW SIZE, NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION, AND PROOFTESTING.
