THIS PAPER PRIMARILY DEALS WITH TOOLING FOR ENGINE NACELLE BOND COMPONENTS CONSISTING OF FAN COWL DOORS, INLET INNER AND OUTER BARRELS AND THRUST REVERSERS. THESE ASSEMBLIES FEATURE VARYING DEGREES OF COMPOUND CONTOUR. MOST OF THE PROGRAMS ARE USING COMPOSITE MATERIALS TO FABRICATE THESE ASSEMBLIES. A VARIETY OF TOOLING MATERIALS HAVE BEEN USED IN THE PAST WHICH INCLUDED FIBERGLASS/EPOXY, FORMED ALUMINUM, ELECTRO-PLATED NICKEL, GRAPHITE/EPOXY ROOM TEMPERATURE, HIGH TEMPERATURE AND NC MACHINED STEEL. MOST RECENTLY, TOOLS HAVE BEEN FABRICATED FROM GRAPHITE/EPOXY PREPREG WITH AUTOCLAVE CURE NON-GELCOAT MATERIAL FOR THREE NEW PROGRAMS. THIS REPORT IS A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE ATTRIBUTES OF GRAPHITE/EPOXY PREPREG TOOLING VERSUS NC MACHINED STEEL TOOLS.
