THIS PAPER COMPARES THE ESTIMATED MACHINING COSTS OF CAST IRON BRAKE ROTORS AND METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES (MMC) ROTORS. THE STUDY INVOLVES CREATING A BASELINE MACHINING MODEL TO FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF ESTIMATED PRODUCTION MACHINING COSTS. THIS MACHINING MODEL IS BASED ON THE HIGH-VOLUME MACHINING OF CAST IRON ROTORS ON A DIAL INDEX MACHINE. COST ESTIMATES ARE DEVELOPED USING THE BASELINE PROCESS TO MACHINE CAST IRON ROTORS AND MACHINING MMC DISK BRAKE ROTORS, USING THE BASELINE MACHINING EQUIPMENT BUT USING PCD TOOLS.
