A SENIOR CAPSTONE DESIGN COURSE TITLED INTEGRATED PRODUCT AND PROCESS DESIGN HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AS PART OF THE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT EFFORT FOR THE NEW MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING PROGRAM IN THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY AT BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY. THIS TWO-SEMESTER COURSE HAS BEEN A JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN FACULTY FROM THE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENTS. THIS COURSE FEATURES A STRUCTURED APPROACH TO PRODUCT AND PROCESS DESIGN BASED ON THE QUALITY FUNCTION DEPLOYMENT APPROACH TO DESIGN. STUDENTS FROM BOTH MANUFACTURING AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ARE DIVIDED INTO TEAMS OF FROM FOUR TO FIVE STUDENTS EACH AND WORK ON SELECTED, INDUSTRIALLY SPONSORED DESIGN PROJECTS. THESE PROJECTS REQUIRE BOTH FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPES AND MANUFACTURABLE PRODUCTION SAMPLES. INPUT FROM INDUSTRY HAS BEEN USED IN DEVELOPING THE COURSE AND AN
