One of the barriers to excellence in manufacturing is the difficulty of communication across occupational and organizational boundaries within manufacturing organizations. This paper reports on the results of a study which explored the differences between the worldviews of machinists and engineers, and the effect on machinists of the dominance of the engineering worldview in design and production settings. It briefly characterizes aspects of the machinist's worldview, and offers several suggestions to educators of engineers about how engineering students might better be prepared for the complex, interdisciplinary, collaborative world of engineering work.
