The proliferation of automation technologies presents a great challenge for managers as well as educators. Visual models are effective communication tools. Two models were devised to capture the intent of the computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM). The first model uses a wheel to map necessary CIM building blocks. The second model uses the calculus symbology to represent the integration issues: area for integration, items to be integrated and integration tools. Both were proven aids for board room presentations as well as classroom lectures.
