Although the value of integrating product and manufacturing process design is widely acknowledged, it is difficult to consistently achieve the desired results. Use of interdisciplinary product development teams is one means to help achieve the desired integration. However, the teams must be placed in an environment that fosters the desired integration. This brief paper presents the research and experiences at Brigham Young University in creating an educational environment for integration. Issues and obstacles are summarized, research reviewed, and implementation approaches presented.
