Limited time and other factors in mechanical engineering schemes of study frequently result in manufacturing aspects being given less exposure than product performance aspects, and students becoming disinterested in manufacturing. This is a shortcoming of mechanical engineering courses, particularly serious as design for performance and manufacture are becoming more integrated in the work place. This case study describes a program of international exchange visits to increase student interest in and awareness of manufacturing that may serve as a model for others to follow, though it is rather expensive.
