Lifelong learning has become something of a cliche in the goals statements of accreditation agencies which oversee engineering education. Yet, engineering education is still largely carried out on traditional patterns, by traditional methods and in traditional venues. This paper takes the view that career work is simply a continuation of the learning process and that learning prior to the start of an engineering career is simply the foundation for deeper knowledge acquired in the workplace. The authors offer a perspective on the formal education of manufacturing engineers and sketch an outline of the corporate employer as a learning organization. A view is offered of a viable, knowledge-oriented career strategy for manufacturing engineers.
