One technique in which students in a manufacturing curriculum can be exposed to the concepts of quality in manufacturing design is by performing industrial experiments. Many such methods exist. In order to teach students that quality is an integral part of the process, the experimental design must be one where quality is a function of each processing step rather than a comparison of a part to an accepted standard. Taguchi methodology is one such method. It is widely accepted, not overly complex, and economical to implement. This works well in the educational environment.
