HONING R & D ACTIVITIES AT THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF BRAUNSCHWEIG DEAL WITH PROCESS-INTEGRATED QUALITY CONTROL AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ADAPTED SENSORS ARE DISCUSSED. SOME SENSORS LIKE INDUCTIVE AND PNEUMATIC TYPES ARE STILL USEFUL. PNEUMATIC TYPES ARE, AT PRESENT, THE REAL WORKHORSES OF IN-PROCESS MEASUREMENT IN HONING. A NEW LASEROPTICAL SENSOR BASED ON A COMPACT DISC LASER-UNIT, DEVELOPED FOR HONING APPLICATIONS, SEEMS SUITABLE TO EXTEND THE MEASUREMENT OF QUALITY CHARACTERISTS NEAR TO OR EVEN WITHIN THE PROCESS. BY COUPLING THE SENSORS TO A COMPUTER-CONTROLLED PRE-, IN- AND POST-PROCESS SYSTEM, AN INTEGRATED QUALITY CONTROL FOR THE HONING PROCESS CAN BE ACHIEVED. TO TAILOR THE PROCESS TO THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF EACH ACTUAL WORKPIECE, A COMPUTER-AIDED PROCESS SIMULATOR CAN BE AN ADDITIONAL SOPHISTICATED TOOL.
