The automotive industry is currently utilizing an increasing number of plastic parts. Plastic parts are typically not painted with the same clearcoat technology as the main vehicle body, but instead are painted with a one component (2K) flexible acrylic melamine clearcoat. 1K flexible acrylic melamine clearcoats have shown themselves to be weaker than the rigid body clearcoats for both initial appearance and long term durability. This inherent weakness, coupled with the increased size of plastic parts may lead to a dissatisfied customer. One way to avoid this customer dissatisfaction, is to utilize a two component polyurethane (2KPUR) clearcoat for plastic parts. 2KPUR clearcoats have shown to be superior to 1K acrylic melamine clearcoats in appearance, environmental weathering exposure, stain resistance, and processability.
