Polyvinylidene chloride based polymers (PVDC) are used in many types of barrier applications. PVDC can be extruded to form monolayer film, multilayer film, multilayer sheet that can be formed into rigid containers, and monofilament fibers. PVDC in the form of a solvent based coating or water based latex can also be coated onto other substrates such as paper and film to improve their barrier properties. This paper will review the background and history of PVDC, the various applications for PVDC, considerations for processing PVDC, and the performance and economics of PVDC versus other barrier polymers.
