The sealant layer of a barrier package is critical to ensuring that the desired barrier characteristics are achieved. Without an outstanding sealant layer, the expensive barrier layer can be rendered useless. Several sealants were compared on the basis of standard seal performance properties: heat seal initiation temperature, heat seal plateau temperature, heat seal plateau strength, hot tack strength, and seal through contamination. Other properties such as haze, puncture resistance, dart impact strength, and organoleptic performance were also discussed. The sealants were compared based on the above properties using ionomers as a comparative standard. The data show that in many cases polyolefin plastomers outperform the other sealants in the most cost effective manner.
