FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURED PARTS DEPENDS LARGELY ON THE WORKPIECE SURFACE. THIS PAPER COMPARES A CAPACITANCE-BASED SURFACE ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENT SYSTEM WITH A STYLUS INSTRUMENT. A VERY HIGH CORRELATION WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE TWO METHODS. FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT THE MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUE, MACHINING METHOD, AND MACHINING CONDITION VARIABLES WERE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT. FOR AN ISOTROPIC SURFACE (EDM) AND A UNIDIRECTIONAL SURFACE (FACING), THE CAPACITANCE TECHNIQUE HAD A SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER VARIABILITY THAN THE STYLUS METHOD.
