BY CONVENTION AND STANDARDIZATION, PRECISION DIMENSIONS ARE SPECIFIED AT 68 DEGREES F (20 DEGREES C). HOWEVER, CONTROLLING THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SHOP FLOOR ENVIRONMENT, THE GAGE, THE SETTING MASTER AND THE WORK PIECE AT PRECISELY 68 DEGREES F IS USUALLY PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE OR IMPRACTICAL. YET, VARIATIONS FROM THIS TEMPERATURE CAN CAUSE MEASUREMENT ERRORS SIGNIFICANTLY BEYOND TOLERANCE LIMITS. AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE SENSING OF MASTER, GAGE, AND WORKPIECE DURING THE GAGING OPERATION CAN PERMIT A TEMPERATURE COMPENSATING SYSTEM TO CORRECT FOR THESE ERRORS. SUCH SYSTEMS CAN BE RETROFIT TO EXISTING GAGES, OR BUILT INTO NEW INSTRUMENTS.
