A GENERAL METHODOLOGY IS INTRODUCED FOR THE UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS OF CMM MEASUREMENTS. THE METHODOLOGY INCLUDES DEFINING, QUANTIFYING, AND COMBINING VARIOUS UNCERTAINTY COMPONENTS FOR THE ENTIRE CMM MEASUREMENT PROCESS TO OBTAIN A SINGLE UNCERTAINTY VALUE FOR ANY SPECIFIC CMM, MEASURED FEATURE, AND MEASUREMENT PROCESS. THE APPROACH IS DESIGNED TO BE FLEXIBLE AND SIMPLE TO IMPLEMENT FOR ANY CMM. REFERENCE TABLES ARE PROVIDED THAT LINK VARIOUS SOURCES OF UNCERTAINTY TO THEIR CORRESPONDING EFFECT ON SPECIFIC MEASURED CHARACTERISTICS. SOME EXAMPLES OF ACTUAL APPLICATIONS OF THE METHODOLOGY ARE DISCUSSED.
