THE ISSUE OF DATA DENSITY IS BEING DISCUSSED MORE OPENLY. OVER 90% OF CMMs UTILIZE TOUGH TRIGGER PROBES FOR DATA COLLECTION. THEY ARE SLOW BECAUSE ONLY ONE PIECE OF INFORMATION IS COLLECTED AT A TIME. TO COUNTERACT THIS, CMM BUILDERS HAVE SPED UP THEIR MACHINES TO THE POINT THAT THEY RESEMBLE HYPERACTIVE WOODPECKERS. THE REMAINING CMMs OPERATE WITH ANALOG PROBES, GATHERING MUCH OF DATA WHILE AVOIDING THE PECKING PROBLEMS, BUT WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. THUS THE COLLECTION OF DATA IS EXPENSIVE, EITHER IN TERMS OF TIME OR MONEY. THIS PAPER LOOKS AT DATA DENSITY AND ITS EFFECT ON CMM MEASUREMENT.
