LASER BLANK WELDING IS THE BUTT WELDING OF FLAT SHEET METAL OF VARYING THICKNESSES, COATINGS AND/OR ALLOYS FOR THE PURPOSE OF PRODUCING ENGINEERED BLANKS. TO OBTAIN CONSISTENT AND RELIABLE PRODUCTION WELDS A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF: EDGE PREPARATION, LASER, MACHINE, WELDING ENGINEERING AND MATERIAL HANDLING IS REQUIRED. AS A RESULT OF THIS TECHNOLOGY, THE ENGINEER CAN DESIGN PROPERTIES INTO A BLANK PRIOR TO STAMPING, THUS ELIMINATING REINFORCING PARTS, REDUCING VEHICLE WEIGHT AND SAVING MONEY. SINCE THE LASER WELDS ARE STRONGER THAN THE PARENT MATERIAL WITH EXCELLENT FORMABILITY, CORROSION, AND FATIGUE PROPERTIES, THE PROCESS CAN BE APPLIED TO MANY BODY-IN-WHITE PARTS.
