THE PRINCIPLES OF SHIELDING GAS SELECTION AND APPLICATION ARE REVIEWED IN THIS PAPER. THE CONTRIBUTION OF SHIELDING GASES TO THE PRODUCTIVITY AND SPEED OF GMAW OR GTAW IS TOO OFTEN OVERLOOKED IN FABRICATION SHOPS. THE DESIGN DEPARTMENT, INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, PURCHASING, PRODUCTION, AND QUALITY ASSURANCE, MUST BE IN AGREEMENT ON HOW TO SPECIFY, PURCHASE, INSTALL, USE AND MAINTAIN ANY NEW GAS. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REASONS FOR MISAPPLICATION OF SHIELDING GASES. FIRST, GASES ARE INVISIBLE AND INTANGIBLE, AND GAS ANALYZERS ARE NOT IN COMMON USE. SECONDLY, THE AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY HAS NOT YET ISSUED ITS SPECIFICATION FOR SHIELDING GASES. CONSEQUENTLY SUPPLIER ARE FREE TO IDENTIFY MIXES WITH THEIR OWN DESIGNATIONS, AND GAS COMPARISONS BECOME MORE DIFFICULT. THIRD, WELDING EQUIPMENT IS USUALLY OUT-OF-ADJUSTMENT. (TESTING A NEW GAS ON A POORLY MAINTAINED WELDER IS LIKE TEST DRIVING ANEW C
