THE HONING INDUSTRY HAS INVESTED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TIME, EFFORT, AND MONEY TO PRODUCE SURFACE TOPOGRAPHIES WHICH MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLE A PLATEAU-TYPE SURFACE. THE MAJOR ADVANCES TOWARD THAT END HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE EMPLOYMENT OF SOME HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED PRESSURE- CONTROL SYSTEMS. THESE SYSTEMS ARE COUPLED WITH A BOND SYSTEM SOFT ENOUGH TO ALLOW CRYSTAL SHED WITHOUT REQUIRING THE HIGH PRESSURES THAT INDUCE SURFACE STRESS AND CAUSE MATERIAL DAMAGE. IN OTHER WORDS, THIS INDUSTRY HAS BEEN WORKING VERY HARD TO MAKE A HARD TOOLING ACT LIKE SOFT TOOLING. THIS PAPER DEMONSTRATES THAT IF SOFT TOOLING CAN BE ADAPTED TO A BORE FINISHING PROJECT AT HAND, IT WILL PROVIDE AN IMPROVED SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY WITHOUT SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTING THE LUBRICATION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CROSS HATCH SURFACE, OTHER THAN TO IMPROVE IT.
