IN THIS STUDY, SEVERAL CASES OF INTERNAL CRACKS COLLECTED FROM VARIOUS FORGING COMPANIES WERE ANALYZED USING A FINITE ELEMENT APPROACH TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSES OF THIS PROBLEM. IT WAS FOUND THAT TWO OF THE MAIN CAUSES ARE: EXCESSIVE DEFORMATION DURING COLD FORGING, AND HIGH TENSILE THERMAL STRESSES DURING INDUCTION HEATING. GUIDELINES FOR PREVENTING INTERNAL CRACKING DURING INDUCTION HEATING WERE DEVELOPED ON THE BASIS OF THIS ANALYSIS.
