For the welding of tinplate bodies for three-piece food and aerosol cans, it is important to have a sufficiently large welding range. The upper limit of a welding range is determined by the occurrence of splash. This can be explained by the fact that the lower electrode wheel in can body welding machines has a smaller diameter than the upper electrode wheel. A process has been developed to raise the splash limit by changing the profile of classifical rectangular wire, resulting in a better balance of the temperature across the weld, so splash will occur at a higher current level.
