Steel is not popular as a material for stay-on-tab, but can be applied in principle. The opening force can be reduced to the same level as aluminum stay-on-tab through the optimization of the configuration and steel properties. The effect of configuration (supplementary score and bead) on opening force was studied by experiments and FEM analyses. For the steel properties, the effects of chemical composition, texture and production condition on the performance required as stay-on-tab was studied. An experimental steel stay-on-tab of the 200 size showed good openability.
