In recent years, gas fired forge furnaces have fallen out of favor in many companies. Compared to induction heaters, they're considered less expensive to purchase and operate. But at the expense of greater scale formation, lower efficiency, higher maintenance and manpower requirements and poorer temperature uniformity. Many of these complaints date from a time when gas furnaces were poorly designed, poorly maintained and operated at the limits of their capabilities. Modern gas furnaces can be highly efficient, consistent, flexible, and reliable. This paper reviews the past mistakes made with gas furnaces and points out the features of properly designed and operated gas furnaces.
