Computer simulation is a useful method to understand and predict failures in die casting shot sleeves. In this paper, three computer models were developed to study the radial deformation of shot sleeve in service by using ABAQUS. The results of the three model approaches were compared with existing experimental data, and the best model was identified. Using the best simulation approach, a case study was performed for a shot sleeve in commercial use that experienced chronic premature failures. The results of the study lead to suggested methods for increasing shot sleeve life by considering the required clearance between shot sleeve and die, shot sleeve and plunger tip, or the use of water or oil cooling in selected areas of the sleeve.
