The heat treatment of aluminum alloys mainly consists of three stages: (i) a solution treatment at an elevated temperature, (ii) quenching the metal from the elevated temperature to room temperature, and (iii) an aging treatment for the controlled dispersion of strengthening precipitates. This paper aims to describe the factors that need to be taken into consideration when a slower quench rate is preferred, or has to be tolerated.
